How briefings are made

A commissioned briefing is written by AI from OpenSenedd's own records, then every point is checked against the sources it cites before it reaches you. This page sets out each step, what we leave out, and what the checks have found so far.

The steps

  1. 1

    Define the subject

An AI model turns your description into search terms, including Welsh names and common abbreviations, a list of the issues to track, and any Welsh Government budget lines that fund the area. Each search term is tested against the record; any that matches far too much is dropped.

  2. 2

    Gather the record

We search everything OpenSenedd holds: Plenary and committee speeches, written questions and answers, statements, votes, Bills, petitions, committee meetings, consultations, Senedd Research articles and news headlines, with budget figures and published surveys of public opinion where they apply. If fewer than 10 relevant speeches or questions turn up, we stop, tell you and return your credit.

  3. 3

    Read and label

A fast AI model reads each speech and question and records its stance on the subject, the issues it touches and a short verbatim quote. Counts of stance and issues, by year and by party, come from these labels.

  4. 4

    Write

A second, more capable model writes the briefing from those sources alone. Every point must cite the sources that support it, up to four. It is told to add nothing from its own knowledge, and it has no access to the web.

  5. 5

    Check every point

Our most capable model then checks each point against the full text of every source it cites, and marks it supported, partly supported or unsupported. Anything not fully supported is rewritten once to say only what the sources support and checked again. Anything that still fails is removed. The briefing ends with a note of how many points were checked, corrected and removed.

  6. 6

    Translate and print

If you asked for Welsh, the checked briefing is translated into Welsh. The PDF is built from the checked text, with numbered references to each source and a link to it.

What we leave out

  • Anything not in the Senedd's record or the other sources listed above. Views from outside the Senedd appear only where they were raised in it.
  • Web searches and the AI's general knowledge.
  • A human edit. Briefings are not read by a person before they are sent; the automatic check is the safeguard. If you find an error, tell us and we'll correct it.

What the checks have found

No customer briefings have been delivered yet. The figures will appear here once they have.
