We call on the Welsh Government to ensure fair NHS access to GLP-1 medications for eligible people with PMOS (formerly referred to as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)). This complex hormonal and metabolic condition can cause insulin resistance and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Women should not have to wait for their health to deteriorate before receiving appropriate treatment. Access should be based on clinical need, not diabetes status alone, helping prevent complications and reduce health inequalities.
More details
The 2023 International Evidence-Based Guideline for PCOS states that weight-management medicines, including semaglutide and liraglutide, may be considered for adults with PCOS alongside lifestyle interventions, following clinical assessment. The guideline recognises the wider metabolic, cardiovascular and psychological impacts of this often under-recognised condition. Welsh Government guidance currently sets specific eligibility criteria for NHS weight-management medicines. We ask the Welsh Government to review these criteria so eligible people with PCOS and significant metabolic risks can be considered for treatment, even without diabetes. Women should not have to wait for preventable complications before receiving appropriate care. Access should include specialist assessment, monitoring and ongoing support, with decisions based on clinical need and evidence.
