We are calling on the Welsh Government to introduce a mandatory requirement to ensure that the results of all cancer-related scans, from scans carried out during the initial diagnostic process to monitoring and follow-up scans, are reported within five working days. This would help prevent delays before multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions are held, and before treatment starts or decisions are made regarding treatment.
More details
A cancer diagnosis affects both the patient and their entire family. Throughout the journey, from the initial diagnosis to subsequent monitoring for possible spread, the time taken to report scan results is inconsistent. The waiting, the anxiety and the uncertainty puts a huge strain on the mental health of patients and their loved ones.
With approximately one in two people receiving a cancer diagnosis during their lifetimes, it is clear that the current system needs to be improved. Delays in obtaining scan results can delay decisions by multidisciplinary teams, as welll as follow-up appointments and the start of treatment.
Patients and their families deserve better. Introducing a mandatory requirement to report the results of cancer scans within five working days would help accelerate clinical decisions, reduce unnecessary delays and ease the emotional burden, contributing to more timely care and better outcomes for patients.
