Question
Will the Welsh Government outline what action it has taken to show solidarity with the queer population of Wales, and symbolically recognise non-binary people?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Social Partnership
The LGBTQ+ Expert Panel whose work has informed our forthcoming LGBTQ+ Action Plan, has recommended that we should use the acronym LGBTQ+ to incorporate queer or questioning identities. This is a change from the Welsh Government’s previous use of LGBT+. Both the Expert Panel and the Welsh Government recognise that there are different views and usages across our communities, and that practice is likely to change again in future.
Through our LGBTQ+ Action Plan, which will shortly be published for consultation, we will seek public views on the use of the acronym LGBTQ+ and whether people feel it is fully representative.
The Action Plan will also propose the use of LGBTQ+ awareness events in the annual calendar as opportunities to uplift LGBTQ+ voices, particularly from under-represented sections of the community. These include, but are not limited to, Pride events, LGBTQ+ History Month, International Non-Binary Day, IDAHOBIT, Bi Visibility Day, Trans Day of Remembrance, and World AIDS Day.
