Question
What support is Welsh Government giving local councils to help them install real-time air quality monitors in schools across Wales?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language
Protecting children and young people from coronavirus is a top priority for us. Orders have been placed for CO2 monitors to aid the monitoring and management of ventilation levels in education settings across Wales. However, real-time air quality monitors are not a substitute for good ventilation of learning spaces, CO2 monitors are being supplied as a tool to assist in the management of ventilation.
Guidance will be provided for the use of CO2 monitors and a sectoral working group has been established to support its development. We also continue to work with our Technical Advisory Group to investigate any and all ways to improve safety in our schools.
I also expect all education settings to have carried out a risk assessment of learning spaces by now, identifying and remediating any obstructions to good ventilation – this could include windows that are broken / stuck closed or ventilation systems not performing as required. This is fundamental in the steps to ensuring good ventilation.
