Question
How many nurses have joined and left the NHS each year since 2016?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services
The number of registered nurses working in NHS Wales organisations has increased by 6.6% between September 2016 and March 2021 (based on latest available StatsWales information).
The following table provides the number of nurse joiners and leavers since 2016, comparing staff in post as at March each year.
2015-16
2016-17
2017-18
2018-19
2019-20
2020-21
Joiners

1775
2268
Leavers
1497
1522
1521
1685
1629
1398
Notes:
• 2019-20 results onwards are based on individual headcount. If an employee has two posts they are counted once. Previous results were based on assignment counts; if an employee had two posts and left NHS contracted employment they would be counted for each
• Joiners are defined as staff that have a record in the current year but did not have a record in the previous year. E.g. nursing staff that have a record in March 2021 but no record in March 2020 appear in the total for 2020-21
• Leavers are defined as staff that have a record in the previous year but do not have a record in the current year. E.g. nursing staff that have a record in March 2020 but no record in March 2021 appear in the total for 2020-21
