Question
How many coronavirus deaths have been recorded in Wales for a) individuals that died as a direct result of coronavirus and b) those that died with coronavirus but also had other life threatening conditions?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) collect and produce mortality statistics for England and Wales from information collected during the death registration process. For question (a), the ONS publish monthly statistics on deaths due to Covid-19 (i.e. where Covid-19 was identified as the underlying (main) cause on the death certificate).
We do not hold the information for question (b). However, as part of the death registration process medical practitioners can list all causes in the chain of events that led to the death and the pre-existing conditions that may have contributed to the death. The ONS publish quarterly information on the number of pre-existing conditions for deaths due to Covid-19, but does not define the severity of these conditions.
The ONS are due to update the mortality publication on the 21 January to include data up to December 2021.
