Question
What discussions has the Welsh Government had with the Coal Authority to review the possibility of using mine water to heat and cool homes and businesses, considering the trial schemes being undertaken by Durham County Council and the Gateshead Energy Company?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Climate Change
We are keen to work with the Coal Authority to focus on a progressive new remit, supporting low carbon uses of our industrial legacy rather than prolonging coal mining activities which add to our greenhouse gas emissions.
We don’t need to look to England for examples of mine water schemes; we have our own projects in development here in Wales. The Welsh Government has been supporting a project in Caerau, on the outskirts of Bridgend, to develop a local heat network using mine water.
We are also in positive and active discussions with the Coal Authority to explore further opportunities for using mine water to heat and cool our homes, public and community buildings and businesses.
