Question
What discussions has the Welsh Government had with the Coal Authority to review the possibility of using mine water to heat greenhouses, given the recent report published by Public Health Wales highlighting the triple challenge to food security?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Climate Change
I am keen to explore every opportunity this technology presents to combat the challenges Wales are facing due to climate change, starting with a clear understanding of the specific locations which offer the best opportunities. We are in discussions with the Coal Authority to explore further opportunities for using mine water in Wales.
We are supportive of the circular economic model which is particularly relevant to Controlled Environment Agriculture, and mine water is worthy of consideration in this respect. Future work with the Coal Authority will help scope the opportunity for the agriculture sector in Wales.
