Question
With the closure of the Calon Lan detox unit in Swansea Bay Health Board and the closure of the Pine detox Unit in Llandough, what are the Welsh Government's plans to address the numbers of individuals waiting for detoxification from alcohol and drugs?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing
Although the detox unit in Cardiff did close at the beginning of the year for a short period, it is now operating at full capacity. The detox service in Swansea Bay University Health Board has remained open, although at a reduced capacity and some wards, including Calon Lan, have had to be repurposed to respond to the pandemic safely.
Residential rehabilitation and inpatient detoxification continue to play an important role in helping service users secure their long term recovery. We are committed to ensuring such services are available on a long term sustainable basis in Wales.
Details of service providers on our residential rehabilitation framework, which offer medically-managed detoxes, have been circulated to health boards and Area Planning Boards.
We have commissioned the National Collaborative Commission Unit to undertake a demand and capacity survey of the current detoxification services available in Wales.
