Question
How many schools in Wales do not have facilities to make freshly prepared school meals?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language
The Welsh Government does not hold this information.
Local authorities must ensure that maintained schools in Wales comply with the Education (School Premises) Regulations 1999. The current regulations, which came into force on 1 February 1999, set minimum standards for the premises of all existing and new schools maintained by a local authority in Wales, that is: to community, community special, foundation, foundation special and voluntary schools.
The Regulations state buildings provided for a school shall be adequate to permit the provision of appropriate ancillary facilities, in particular for the preparation or serving of food and drinks and the washing of crockery and other utensils.
As part of work to support the rollout of Universal Primary Free School Meals I have provided local authorities across Wales with £25million capital funding to upgrade kitchen and dining facilities. My officials are currently working in partnership with local authorities and the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) to identify any future capital funding requirements to meet this commitment.
This work is being carried out in collaboration with Siân Gwenllian MS, the Plaid Cymru lead designated member, as part of the Co-operation Agreement between the Welsh Government and Plaid Cymru.
