Question
Will the Minister provide details on the procedures in place for helping parents with adopted children support them through education?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Social Services
The role of an adoptive parent is crucial, not only in providing a child with a stable family environment, but by supporting them through their journey in education. The support and encouragement that is given to these children about their education is vital for their future success.
Adoptive parents need to be equipped to support their children on this journey. Welsh Government provides annual funding of £189,723 to Adoption UK Cymru. This funding will be used to support the delivery of specialised help and advice to adoptive parents as their children move through the education system. A dedicated helpline has been set up which offers an individualised enhanced call back service from a lead Education Officer. In addition, tailored training packages are available to support adoptive parents choose an appropriate school for their child alongside step-by-step guidance on how to navigate the various school systems which are in place for children with additional learning needs.
Regional adoption agencies offer a host of tailored assistance to their adoptive families around the education system alongside supporting liaison between schools and adoptive families. As part of the Welsh Government’s commitment to improve the educational outcomes for looked after children, we want to ensure that adopted children are not overlooked.
We continue to work closely with Adoption UK Cymru and the National Adoption Service to better understand how adoptive families can be supported in schools. We have provided funding to deliver projects which:
• raise awareness of the needs of adopted children;
• share effective interventions; and
• support adopted learners transition from Primary to Secondary school.
Welsh Government has also funded the co-production of a ‘parents’ guide to working with schools. This resource is designed to help adoptive parents work effectively in partnership with education professionals, particularly those in school, and to help equip them with the knowledge and skills to do so.
