Question
Will the Minister provide a breakdown of the number of children, men, and women in Welsh refugee welcome centres as of 5 July 2022, and confirm how many of those children are enrolled in local schools?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Social Justice
As at 5 July, there were 357 women, 266 men and 186 children (aged under 18) in the Welsh Government welcome centres.
School enrolment takes place when families move on from welcome centres to longer-term accommodation in communities across Wales. This is to limit disruption for children and young people in terms of settling into a school – welcome centres are designed to offer people from Ukraine initial accommodation after they arrive in Wales via the super-sponsor scheme.
Local authorities provide up to two hours of formal school-age education per day, either on-site at the welcome centres or nearby, and up to two hours of early years education. English and Welsh for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL/WSOL) tuition is also available for people staying in the welcome centres.
