Written question WQ85764

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has the potential to contribute to the decarbonisation of parts of the economy that might not be readily capable of switching to renewable energy sources, or for hard to abate emissions from industry. Welsh Government therefore aims to understand fully the potential for CCS deployment in Wales, and the opportunities and challenges associated with developing effective storage infrastructure.

We have recently completed research reviewing the viability of a CCS network in Wales and how it might contribute to achieving net zero. We will continue to build on our existing evidence base early in the second Carbon Budget (2021-2025), undertaking further research including an economic impact assessment, the development of a potential infrastructure plan, and a detailed regulatory route map. We are also working with industry, through the CCS Clusters and the emerging HyNet project, to better understand storage potential.

The licensing of geological storage of CO2 in the offshore region is reserved to UK Government. We will continue to engage with the UK Government on its developing CCS policies and regulations to ensure they take account of the needs of Wales.
