Question
What meetings has the Minister had with the north Wales education consortia regarding the difficulties faced by schools in north Wales, and publish the details of these meetings?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language
As I set out in my response to your previous questions (WQ86267/86271/86273) on 14 October 2022, local authorities have statutory responsibility for monitoring their schools and providing support where needed. The GwE regional consortium provides a range of school improvement services and professional learning on behalf of the North Wales local authorities in order to support schools across the region.
A number of secondary schools in special measures in North Wales are participating in the multi-agency support approach, introduced by Welsh Government. The purpose of the approach is to ensure that our secondary schools with the highest needs benefit from effective, joined up support, drawn across the system, which is focused on their improvement needs and helps them sustain their improvement.
Through the multi-agency approach, my officials are able to monitor the progress of those schools in North Wales facing the greatest difficulties. Senior Welsh Government officials regularly attend meetings of the Association of Directors of Education in Wales (ADEW), along with regional consortia Managing Directors, to discuss the wider schools’ context. Welsh Government officials also meet with the regional consortia directly at all levels on a regular basis.
