Question
Why has the Welsh Government failed to draw up contingency plans within the last three years, following the announcement that the safety risk on the Menai Bridge was first identified in 2019, and the Britannia Bridge has closed on average seven times a year?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Climate Change
UK Highways are operators of the A55 between junctions 1 and 11. They manage the A5 Menai Bridge as part of the A55 DBFO contract and are therefore responsible for this section of the network and related contingency plans.
Contingency plans for the A55 Britannia Bridge fall to the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent to manage. This includes a specific A55 Britannia Bridge High Winds Contingency plan. This has been in place for seven years and details can be found at A55 Britannia Bridge High Winds | Traffic Wales). This was last updated on 14 October 2022 in order to review the threshold wind speeds.
