Question
What contributions did the Welsh Government provide during the planning stage and first year of Project Gigabit?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Economy
The Welsh Government has been in dialogue with the UK Government since it announced in March 2020 its plans to invest £5 billion of public funding to secure gigabit capable broadband in every UK home.
While Project Gigabit remains a UK Government programme, with planning responsibility resting firmly with the UK Government, the Welsh Government has proactively supported the initiative.
We have conducted an Open Market Review process and a subsequent Public Review process to identify those premises eligible for intervention and hosted an engagement event for potential suppliers to discuss opportunities in Wales.
Over the same period, the Welsh Government introduced top-up funding to Project Gigabit’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme to reflect the higher cost of deploying in Wales.
