Question
What is the total number of Welsh students who are eligible for the education maintenance allowance, for the current financial year; and each of the last five financial years, broken down by local authority?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language
The number of approved EMA applications for the past five years, split by local authority area is available at: https://statswales.gov.wales/v/Mb0Z
These statistics are for academic years and not financial years. The Welsh Government does not hold data by financial years.
As the Member recently ascertained from the Senedd research department, it is not currently possible to estimate the number of students who are eligible for EMA due to the lack of specific data on household income and number of dependents.
