Question
What action is the Welsh Government taking to improve the safety of public transport drivers?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Climate Change
The safety of public transport drivers is the responsibility of their employer in compliance with their obligations under the Health & Safety at Work Act. Employers must undertake a risk assessment for lone workers and put in place appropriate mitigations. These can include CCTV systems, protective screens for the driver cabs, the issue of mobile phones and vehicle GPS.
Transport for Wales are delivering improvements to stations and facilities across Wales and the Borders including items such as CCTV which will help make our stations safer for passengers and staff.
The British Transport Police (BTP) have primary responsibility for managing crime and anti-social behaviour on the rail network and the Welsh Government provides funding to deploy additional officers in Wales.
