Question
What steps is the Welsh Government taking to use green technologies to reduce air pollution in cities and towns?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Climate Change
The Welsh Government’s Clean Air Plan for Wales recognises that the right kind of green infrastructure in the right place can help mitigate some forms of air and noise pollution.
The provision of green infrastructure is a key policy requirement of Future Wales and Planning Policy Wales (PPW). We are currently consulting on draft planning guidance regarding air quality, noise and soundscape which covers the opportunities and limitations of green infrastructure in addressing air and noise pollution. The consultation closes on 20 January 2023 and can be viewed here.
We have launched a pilot Local Air Quality Management Support Fund scheme to encourage bids from local authorities for innovative and effective projects to improve air quality. Through the first phase of the scheme (2021/2022 financial year), we funded a collaborative project between Swansea Council and Swansea University to test the effectiveness of ‘green screens’ at two primary schools. More information on the project can be viewed here.
