Question
Further to WQ87154 will the Minister make a statement on the fact that the Welsh Government’s flood risk management strategy is currently resulting in zero support being provided to some historic sites in Wales which are being damaged by flooding?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, and Chief Whip
The Welsh Government’s National Strategy for Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management sets out how we prioritise investment towards high risk communities, where reducing risk to life takes precedence.
The Strategy also encourages Risk Management Authorities (RMAs), such as local authorities and Natural Resources Wales, to develop additional schemes which provide wider benefits to businesses and the environment. This would include schemes which benefit the historic environment.
The Strategy identifies that there are over 245,000 properties currently at risk of flooding in Wales. Any scheme designed by an RMA would need to justify why funding was being diverted away from protecting people’s lives and homes.
