Question
Further to WQ87152 will the Minister explain why Cadw’s historic buildings capital grant programme does not extend to historic parks and gardens, and who made that decision?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, and Chief Whip
Cadw’s Historic Buildings Grant Capital Programme is specifically designed to assist with repairs to the fabric of listed buildings that are at risk or in a vulnerable condition. The application guidance explains that the grant can fund:
• Works of repair to the building envelope to prevent a further deterioration in condition and loss of significance; (structural works, temporary stabilisation and protection, roofing works, leadwork repairs, renewal of rainwater disposal systems, masonry repairs, external joinery works, protective finishes).
• Works of repair, both internally and externally that support proposals to bring the asset back into use; (in addition to the works listed above, timber repairs, plastering works, internal joinery repairs).
Historic parks and gardens are a different category of asset and any financial support for them would need to be tailored to their particular characteristics and needs.
As the relevant Minister, I am ultimately responsible for the budget decisions of the department.
