Question
What consideration has the Welsh Government given to re-examining fare prices for public transport in Wales?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Climate Change
We have been working closely with Transport for Wales to examine the costs and benefits of introducing a range of fares and ticketing options designed to make bus travel easier and more accessible for all. The aim of this work was to explore options to simplify the fares and ticketing system for bus travel. As part of this work, we have looked at the introduction of more comprehensive integrated bus and rail ticketing, simplified cash fares, multi journey tickets, and further enhancements to existing travel discount schemes for younger people. We now have a better understanding of the costs and feasibility of introducing these improvements and will look to bring forward our own scheme when appropriate funding becomes available.
Transport for Wales regularly consider the cost of the range of rail fares they control within Wales to ensure they are offering value for money for passengers, including offering free child travel alongside a fare paying adult, reduced price offers on Advance tickets and will be trialling Pay as You Go ticketing in the South Wales metro area later this year.
