Question
Will the Minister state what the average reading age of a young person leaving school in Wales is currently, and has been each of the last five years?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language
I am committed to ensuring that every learner has the reading skills they need to reach their potential. Reading is an essential gateway skill that forms the foundations of all learning and communication.
Individual schools and teachers will use a range of approaches and assessment methods to support their learners. Included in these approaches is the use of statutory personalised assessments in reading which are taken by all learners annually between Years 2 and 9. These online assessments provide feedback which schools use alongside other assessment information to help their learners further develop their skills. Information on progress builds up assessment by assessment as learners move through school, allowing teachers to review development over time and to plan next steps.
In November 2021, I gave an oral statement on the importance of all learners achieving high standards of reading and oracy skills. I will be providing an update on progress in this area shortly.
