Question
What is the Minister doing to make sure that those who complete their teaching PGCE in Wales stay and become teachers in Wales?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language
All of our programmes of Initial Teacher Education are aligned to the Curriculum for Wales and deliver high quality Newly Qualified Teachers (NQT) who have been trained to teach in the Welsh education system.
In November 2022, changes were made to induction to introduce greater flexibility, reduce bureaucracy and strengthen the professional learning and mentoring available to all NQTs, regardless of the route they take through induction.
Induction forms part of the Early Career Support Package which has been designed for teachers in the first four years of their career to support their ongoing development as a professional, as well as helping to ensure that they continue to find teaching stimulating and rewarding. It provides teachers with tailored, high-quality support, creating greater continuity from initial teacher education to induction and beyond.
The Welsh Government continues to ensure teachers’ pay and conditions remain attractive. Despite severe financial constraints, we are making improved pay awards for both 2022/23 and 2023/24 along with a package to address workload.
