Question
Will the Minister provide an update on her officials' meeting with Natural Resources Wales and Caerphilly Council about Tŷ Llwyd quarry on 4 July 2023?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Climate Change
Following leachate breakouts from the site during the winter months, leachate sampling was undertaken by both Caerphilly County Borough Council and Natural Resources Wales. Neither investigation has identified heavily polluted effluent leaving the Ty Llwyd site. To reduce the likelihood of future off-site discharges, the council confirmed further preventative action will be taken. This includes broadening the environmental monitoring on and around the site, in addition to developing a remediation options appraisal.
Based on existing monitoring data, both the council and Natural Resources Wales do not believe the site is causing significant pollution to controlled waters nor does it meet the contaminated land determination criteria.
The council has also committed to continue providing the local community with up-to-date information and ongoing reassurance.
