Question
What analysis has the Minister made of the significance of the latest HESA data on university income and expenditure published in April this year regarding the position of higher education establishments in Wales?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language
Responsibility for oversight of the financial stability of the Welsh higher education sector sits with the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and is reported and discussed with the Welsh Government through established governance and accountability arrangements.
HESA data is a valuable source of information providing benchmarking of the whole UK sector. HEFCW has published an analysis of this data which can be found at: Financial position of Higher Education Institutions in Wales 2021/22 - HEFCW.
It is important to remember that this data represents a point in time (31 July 2022) and is not the basis for the entire financial oversight and monitoring of the sector.
