Question
What assessment has the Welsh Government made of the economic impact of national parks on local farmers?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Climate Change
As part of their statutory designation programme for a new National Park in North East Wales, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is undertaking a detailed analysis of the Forces for Change which influence the area’s special qualities. This will include consideration of the rural economy, local communities and agri-environment schemes. Agriculture plays an important role in all our National Parks and farms across Wales are already engaged collaboratively with them in delivering sustainable land management and nature friendly farming.
Our Sustainable Landscapes Sustainable Places (SLSP) programme, for example, includes a number of collaborative projects such as the three-year Traditional Field Boundaries programme that focusses on restoring and creating hedgerows which have a range of proven environmental benefits while protecting one of the most striking features of our National Parks.
