Question
What measures is the Welsh Government taking to address the shortage of teachers in Wales?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language
Official figures show that teacher recruitment and retention remain stable.
We undertake a range of activities to ensure there is a sufficient supply of qualified teachers. These include our financial incentives, targeted at attracting those most needed in our teaching workforce to enter teacher training programmes and the provision of alternative routes into teaching through the Part-time PGCE and the Salaried PGCE. We have published the Welsh in Education Workforce Plan to address issues in the Welsh medium workforce. We also continue to work with partners to promote teaching as a career.
