Question
What action is the Welsh Government taking to promote the take-up of darts with younger people, following the 2024 PDC Darts World Championship?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism
The Welsh Government does not run campaigns promoting specific sports; it is for sport National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and other sports organisations to promote the benefits of their own sports and encourage participation.
The Welsh Government provides funding to Sport Wales which in turn is used to support NGBs, sports organisations and individual clubs via a range of grant schemes and initiatives, including support for participation campaigns.
However, at present there is no recognised NGB for darts in the UK. For sports and NGBs to be officially recognised in the UK, they must be approved through a formal application process. Recognition is a joint policy, operated by the four Home Country Sports Councils (Sport Wales, Sport England, Sport Northern Ireland and Sport Scotland) and UK Sport. Applications for recognition of a sport and an NGB for that sport are dealt with by these organisations in partnership, as a UK Recognition panel.
