Question
What action will the Welsh Government take throughout the remainder of this year to reduce the number of GPs leaving the profession?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services
GPs may choose to leave the profession for any number of reasons, including retirement or a change in personal circumstances.
Overall, the number of GPs practising in Wales in recent years remains relatively steady, with an increase in the number of trainee GPs and an increase in wider practice staff.
As outlined in WQ90307, over the last 3 years from June 2020, the number of fully qualified permanent GPs who left the workforce has remained between 6-9%, with between 8-10% joining the workforce.
We expect the announcement of the end of GMS contract negotiations on 7 February, with £20 million investment into general practice will be helpful to GP independent contractors in in their business planning for the remainder of this year.
