Question
Has the Minister had any discussions with Powys County Council in relation to a significant number of schools being shut due to weather conditions on 8 February?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language
The decision to close schools due to extreme weather lies with individual headteachers or local authorities.
We expect schools and education settings to have contingency plans in place for extreme weather, in line with the guidance for schools and settings on what to consider during such periods, and to communicate their decisions clearly and promptly to parents, staff and the public.
The guidance, part of a suite of emergency planning and response guidance for education and childcare settings, is published online and periodically reviewed and updated. It includes specific guidance on Opening schools as well as childcare and play settings in extreme bad weather and extreme hot weather | GOV.WALES.
