Question
How does the Minister plan to address safety concerns from parents following the action plan laid out in the active travel delivery plan to expand the reach of school-based pedestrian and cycle training programmes?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Climate Change
We are funding improvements to walking and cycling routes and facilities specifically linked to schools through the Safe Routes in Communities Grant each year. Since 2018, Welsh Government has provided Local Authorities across Wales with almost £23 million (up to March 2024) through the Safe Routes in Communities Grant. This grant includes funding the development of School Streets schemes, which help address safety concerns relating to traffic at the school gate.
School-based pedestrian and cycle training provides children with practical skills, increases knowledge, and raises awareness of road safety, which should increase parents’ confidence.
The introduction of 20mph speed limits on residential roads and busy pedestrian streets across Wales will create safer environments for all modes. Decreased speeds will reduce collisions, save lives, and reduce injuries, making our streets safer for children and parents walking, wheeling, and cycling to school.
