Question
What lessons has the Cabinet Secretary learnt from the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence, and how will this feed into the Curriculum for Wales?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education
The Curriculum for Wales was developed by a wide range of practitioners working in partnership with school improvement services, Estyn, Qualifications Wales, and Welsh and international experts. During the curriculum development process, we learned from a wide range of education systems and their approach to curriculum and assessment, and continue to do so. We regularly engage with other UK governments and international organisations like the OECD on a range of educational issues to inform policy development.
Our Curriculum’s emphasis on learners’ progression in a range of both knowledge and skills is based on a wide range of international evidence, and differs from the Curriculum for Excellence in a number of significant ways.
To ensure we understand the experience of schools, practitioners, and leaders as they implement the Curriculum for Wales, we are taking a rigorous and transparent approach to evaluation, as outlined in the Curriculum Evaluation Plan. This will enable us to learn from the opportunities and challenges of implementation and tailor our support to schools appropriately.
