Question
What steps has the Cabinet Secretary taken toward making it mandatory for first aid kits on Transport for Wales trains to include adrenaline pens?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales
Powers regarding the sale and supply of medicines are reserved to the UK Government. Currently as prescription only medicines, adrenaline autoinjectors (AAIs) can only be supplied in accordance with a prescription or under a specific exemption set out in the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, which apply to the UK as a whole. As such it is not possible for Transport for Wales to provide AAIs in first aid kits on their trains.
In accordance with advice given by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency we advise that all patients who are known to be at risk of anaphylaxis are prescribed and at all times carry two AAI devices for emergency use.
