Question
What assessment has the Cabinet Secretary made of the adequacy of funding and support for children with additional learning needs in mainstream educational settings?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education
Local authorities are responsible for ensuring suitable education for children and young people in their area, including those with additional learning needs (ALN). The Welsh Government continues to prioritise investment in ALN and all local authorities should work with their mainstream and special schools to ensure their school funding arrangements are effective in supporting and raising the achievement of all children with ALN.
Estyn regularly inspects mainstream educational settings, and local authorities must keep their arrangements for children and young people with ALN, and those of their maintained schools, under review. This review includes consideration of the extent to which these arrangements are sufficient to meet the ALN of the children and young people for whom they are responsible.
The Welsh Government is working with Estyn, local authorities, schools and other partners as part of its programme to monitor and evaluate its ALN reforms.
