Question
Will the Cabinet Secretary confirm whether schools will accept an ADHD diagnosis if it has been obtained privately?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education
An ADHD diagnosis, whether it was obtained from the NHS or a registered private practitioner, may form part of the evidence a school uses when deciding how best to meet a pupil’s educational needs.
In circumstances where pupils have identified additional learning needs (ALN), schools may use information from a range of sources to help describe the pupil’s ALN when developing an individual development plan and the additional learning provision they require.
Although a formal diagnosis may help support this process, it is not necessary for a pupil to have a medical diagnosis to access educational support or to receive additional learning provision.
