Question
Will the Cabinet Secretary outline the ways in which the Welsh Government intends to support teenage Ukrainian refugees who want to study Ukrainian at GCSE and A-level?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education
While awarding bodies can develop GCSEs and A-levels in any modern foreign language, there are currently no GCSEs or A-levels offered in Wales, England or Northern Ireland in Ukrainian. As part of the reform of national 14-16 qualifications, being led by Qualifications Wales, reformed made-for-Wales GCSEs in French, German and Spanish will be available for first teaching from September 2025. Should an awarding body wish to develop and introduce a GCSE or A-level in Ukrainian, Qualifications Wales have processes in place through their designation policy to make that qualification available in Wales.
The website of the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science provides information on how to organise learning for Ukrainian children abroad, including access to assessments.
I have asked Qualifications Wales and my officials to continue to engage with their UK counterparts to inform Wales’ approach to supporting our Ukrainian learners.
