Question
Will the Cabinet Secretary explain how the figure cited by the then First Minister claiming the 20mph policy would save the NHS £92 million every year by reducing thousands of casualties for emergency services to deal with on BBC Radio Wales on 7 September 2023, was calculated?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales
Research undertaken by public health practitioners and Edinburgh Napier University suggests that the estimated reduction in casualties each year from the introduction of the 20mph default speed limit in Wales, could provide around £92m in prevention savings. This includes, but is not limited to, reduced impact on the NHS and emergency services. Other savings included are due to lost output (including future lost earnings), medical and ambulance costs and human costs.
