Question
How many students in Carmarthenshire benefited from the increase in the education maintenance allowance?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Further and Higher Education
The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) weekly rate was increased from £30 to £40 in April 2023. The increase applied to eligible students in study at that time and for future eligible students.
The total number of EMA recipients (approved applications) from Carmarthenshire in academic year 2022/23 was 960; those who returned to study following the Easter break in April 2023 would have benefitted from the increase.
All eligible EMA recipients would have received the increased rate in academic year 2023/24; there were 1,000 EMA recipients from Carmarthenshire that year.
EMA recipient data by local authority is available publicly on StatsWales and updated at the end of each academic year.
