Question
What discussions has the Welsh Government had with Transport for Wales about opening closed or creating new railway stations since 2020?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales
The Welsh Government has regular discussions with Transport for Wales regarding improvements to the railway infrastructure, such as new stations, in Wales.
Most of the railway infrastructure in Wales, with the exception of the Core Valley Lines, is owned by the UK Government who are responsible for funding for new or reopened stations on this infrastructure. The UK Government have now recognised that Wales has been underfunded for rail infrastructure improvements. They agree with us that the five new stations recommended in the South East Wales Transport Commission report are a priority for delivery, alongside the recommendations in the North Wales Transport Commission report.
As part of the transformation of the Core Valley Lines, Transport for Wales will be opening new stations at Butetown and at Crwys Road. There are no plans to close any stations across Wales.
