Question
What plans does the Cabinet Secretary have to publish a targeted action plan for less survivable cancers in order to ensure comprehensive commissioning and diagnostic capacity, urgent suspected cancer pathways, and GP direct access?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care
The Welsh Government is committed to improving outcomes for all cancers, including those with the lowest survival rates.
Our approach to cancer care is set out in the Quality Statement for Cancer, and the NHS has responded by publishing the Cancer Improvement Plan. This includes a focus on detecting cancer at earlier, more treatable stages and putting in place rapid access to investigation and treatment.
Several actions support this aim, including improved access to diagnostic care, the introduction of rapid diagnostic centres for people with unclear symptoms, digital support for all GPs on cancer referral, nationally agreed pathways to support health board planning of services, and the use of clinical audit to measure the quality of care.
