Question
What steps is the Cabinet Secretary taking to lower train fares, especially for people who do not drive?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales
We recognise the importance of ensuring rail fares are affordable for passengers and represent value for money. Transport for Wales have already introduced Pay-As-You-Go ticketing at 96 stations in South Wales, offering guaranteed best value tickets with daily and weekly price caps in place for journeys now on brand new trains thanks to our £800m investment in a new fleet. Over 1.5 million journeys have now been made using Pay-As-You-Go, with Transport for Wales being the first train operator outside of London and the South East of England to introduce this payment system and leading the way in the UK rail industry. I look forward to Pay-As-You-Go being introduced across North Wales soon enabling even more people to benefit from flexible and affordable travel across Wales. For longer journeys Transport for Wales continue to offer excellent value Advance tickets and provide free off peak travel for children under 16 when they travel with a fare paying adult.
