Question
What assessment has the Cabinet Secretary made of the impact on Wales and its social cohesion of the discontinuation of theology and religious studies degree courses, given that by the end of the year it is likely that no universities in Wales will offer single honours degrees in either subject?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Further and Higher Education
I recognise the importance of social cohesion in developing an environment where people from different backgrounds share values and mutual respect, feel a sense of belonging within their community, and feel safe from harm.
As I set out in my written statement in February, I asked Medr to undertake a mapping exercise of demand and delivery of courses across the sector, the initial findings of which will be published soon.
Whilst universities as autonomous institutions are responsible for their own academic affairs, including decisions on course provision and delivery,
this will help Welsh Government, Medr and the sector consider how we can ensure the continued delivery of a diverse range of subjects across Wales.
