Question
What consideration has the Cabinet Secretary given to conducting a review of the effectiveness of existing flood alleviation schemes?
Answer
Answered by Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs
It is important that we constantly review arrangements and assumptions in light of recent events and updated forecasts about the impact of climate change.
Our Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) Programme provides funding to Risk Management Authorities (RMAs – local authorities and NRW) to identify and develop flood alleviation schemes. Should an RMA identify the need for a new scheme, or wish to review the effectiveness of existing assets, they can apply to the programme for funding. As with all applications to our FCERM programme, schemes are prioritised according to risk and will need to be considered alongside bids from other RMAs.
I will be meeting with RMAs to discuss this issue how we ensure that Wales remains resilient to the increasing threat of flooding associated with Climate Change.
