Question
What assessment has been made of the reasons why the A40 Llanddewi Velfrey bypass, which opened in May 2025, already requires resurfacing, and what steps are being taken to address any defects and prevent similar issues on future road schemes?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales
Following incidents on the A40 Llanddewi Velfrey bypass, repairs were undertaken on the safety barrier. At the same time the safety barriers were being repaired an isolated area with a surfacing defect was identified and was repaired at the Contractor’s expense.
There is no evidence to suggest that the surfacing defect was a contributing factor to the incidents, and the isolated surfacing issue is not reflective of the wider scheme.
There will be follow-up lesson learned workshop to ensure any learning from this surfacing issue informs future design, construction methods, and quality assurance on other road schemes across Wales.
