Question
Will the Cabinet Secretary provide an update on what support is provided to patients and families once they leave hospital following a surgery?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care
Post‑operative care after discharge depends on the patient’s clinical needs and the type of surgery performed.
· Elective surgery: Post‑discharge care should be planned in advance as part of the admission process. For example, orthopaedic patients should have home adaptations and recovery expectations arranged during pre‑operative assessments, often supported through education classes.
· Minor procedures: Some surgeries require very little post‑operative support, which can usually be managed by primary care without formal follow‑up.
· Emergency surgery: Because these are unplanned, post‑operative care requirements are arranged after the event and tailored to the patient’s discharge needs. Discharge planning includes organising any community services required, such as nursing or therapy support, and if required home adaptions and aids.
