Question
What action will the Cabinet Minister take to examine to what extent the Voice of Wales foments hatred and division in south-west Wales, with a view to curtailing harmful social media activity?
Answer
Answered by Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Minister for Social Justice and Equality (Sioned Williams)
The safety and wellbeing of people is a shared responsibility and a duty that falls to both the Welsh Government and UK Government. Internet services and telecommunications are reserved matters to the UK Government. In the context of the Online Safety Act 2023 we will seek to work with Ofcom in their capacity as the online safety regulators, to address illegal and harmful content online, with the aim of preventing hard to individuals.
In our manifesto we have committed to ensure that all learners in Wales receive comprehensive education in digital and online safety, media literacy, and how to identify mis- and disinformation.
Our cohesion work across South-West Wales (and all of Wales) aims to foster good relations between groups and combat hatred and division. Respect, solidarity and fair play are guiding principles of government – shaping how we build fairer, safer and united communities.
