Question
Will the Cabinet Minister confirm whether the Welsh Government has a minimum target or recommendation for school size for primary schools?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Minister for Education and the Welsh Language (Anna Brychan)
The Welsh Government does not set a minimum target or recommendation for school sizes.
The responsibility for the planning of school places rests with local authorities. Local authorities must ensure there are sufficient schools providing primary and secondary education for their area. Schools are regarded as sufficient if they are sufficient in number, character and equipment to provide for all pupils the opportunity of appropriate education.
The School Organisation Code requires proposers to consider a range of factors when making school organisation proposals. These include educational standards, financial sustainability, demand for places and surplus capacity, and accessibility and community impact.
