Question
Will the Cabinet Minister consider supporting UNESCO world heritage status for the South Gower Coast to boost local tourism, in light of the recent discovery of Britain's oldest cave painting in a South Gower cave and other important archaeological and cultural sites such as the Red Lady of Paviland?
Answer
Answered by Trefnydd, Chief Whip and Cabinet Minister for Culture and Sport (Heledd Fychan)
I recognise the exceptional archaeological and cultural importance of the South Gower Coast. It forms part of one of the most archaeologically rich landscapes in Wales, with several dozen scheduled monuments and over 100 listed buildings across the Gower peninsula, reflecting a long and significant history of human activity.
World Heritage Site status is reserved for places of Outstanding Universal Value and involves meeting rigorous UNESCO criteria. Nominations are taken forward through a UK-wide process and must demonstrate not only clear international significance but also strong and sustainable long-term management arrangements. Following an open competitive process in 2022, the UK currently has a full Tentative List of sites for future nomination.
The Welsh Government remains committed to promoting and protecting Wales’ historic environment. We will continue to work with partners to ensure the area’s heritage is conserved, better understood and used sustainably to support local communities and tourism.
